A Super Last Minute New Year's Eve Decor- Another Disco Ball

I really had no plan of making this little ditty, but I saw shiny foil cupcake wrappers and as I find myself influenced by Aunt Peaches creative uses for culinary accessories, I was sold.

So to start with, I bought 3 containers of the cupcake wrappers and it ended up being just enough.

P.S. You get double the papers since there is a white liner between the foil ones...just look at the pile of crafting fodder I have left! Maybe I'll have to make a Lotus Blossom Ball like Aunt Peaches' in the link above.

Paper Towel Roll Airplanes

Another rainy Saturday, so we made airplanes out of paper towel roll. The pictures did not turn out that great, they look better in person.
The kids enjoyed making them, and playing with them afterwards.
We used: paper towel rolls (you could also use toilet paper rolls for smaller planes), scissors, glue, construction paper, markers, foam sheets ( I used them for the wings, so when the kids throw them they would bend, but you could also use construction paper or card stock. I got the foam sheets at the Dollar Tree), aluminum foil (for windows), and reinforcement labels(for decorations)

Paper Towel Roll Fall Trees

My daughter and I made this simple, but cute Fall tree .

You will need: Paper towel roll, brown paint, paint brush, glue, card stock or poster board (stiff paper), tissue paper (fall colors), and scissors.

peaches’ coffee filter flowers

turning humble materials into something beautiful is an admirable skill. whenever you think you’ve seen the prettiest thing, something else comes along and blows your mind! these gorgeous blossoms are similar to the ones sold in kits that are made with tissue paper, but even tissue paper can be kind of pricey, and it doesn’t always come in the full range of colors you want. enter these amazing coffee filter flowers byaunt peaches! a recycled art specialist who works with a healthy dose of wacky fun, peaches makes flowers from materials most people toss in the waste bin. if you’re planning any end of summer parties, consider making some of these colorful flowers to scatter on your table.

Delicate Wax Doily Valentines from Scented Candle Stubs

I heart snow days. Literally.

Tuesday's blizzard meant spending Wednesday indoors having fun with Bird, eating frozen pizza and making all kinds of valentine fun, including these wonderfully dainty wax doilies. They are so delicate and elegant! Smell nice too. Most things come out of my craft studio covered in glue blobs and smelling like burning hair...these valentines must be Bird's influence.

Hearts made from melted crayons have been popular for a few years now, thanks to Martha's tutorial. But as much as  I love Maratha's hearts, I'm too much of a klutz to follow the steps without breaking the end result. I decided it would be easier if there was softer wax and a sturdier base;  enter paper doilies and scented candles.

T-Shirt Weaving

t-shirt-weaving.jpg
Earth Day is April 22, so help your kids celebrate with an upcycled weaving project using old t-shirts. My six-year-old was fascinated to watch me cut up clothing (not for the first time) and we thought of many more uses for these cast-off shirts. I’m certain that you have some old t-shirts lying around the house, but if you get them at the thrift store, look for extra large shirts with no seams on the sides to make the longest strips. We used string for the base (called warp strings) because I found it easier for little hands to work with, but you could also use more t-shirt strips, creating a denser weave and a fully recycled project. And if you don’t have a loom, don’t go buy one

Plantable Paper for Earth Day

recycled-paper2.jpg
Earth Day is April 22, so celebrate by growing some paper. Made from recycled materials, this homemade paper has added seeds so that it can be planted. If you punch a hole in the paper, these would make wonderful gift tags for a Mother’s Day gardening themed gift. So you can make them on Earth Day and give them on Mother’s Day! Making paper is a simple process that you can complete using household items, but it is a bit of a messy project, so be prepared. My kids loved playing in the gooey paper pulp.

Little Boat Ornaments Tutorial

I've been working on the rest of the tutorials for the little sailboats and canoes and cars and planes!

If you're new to House Revivals, these are sweet little ornaments made from egg cartons!

Grade AA Crafting

Here is a glimpse of a Grade AA ornament idea that bounced around in my brain every morning at breakfast time for nearly twenty years -- that's a lot of brain bouncing!

Today I will share a little before and after, and save the tutorial for a later post.

For years, every time I opened up an eighteen count carton of eggs, the inside top of the carton would make me happy.  Of course, the beautiful texture of the cardboard  was part of the reason, but there was something else....

Book Wreath Tutorial

The vintage book wreath was inspired by the clean, understated aesthetic of our local Japan Town.

I wanted something on a square base, with a vintage feel, that had a subtle mix of texture and color.

Paper Weaving - make a greetings card

Things to make and do - art: Paper weaving

Weaving with Paper/Card

Weaving is very versatile as it can be made out of many things such as paper and card, wool, fabric, ribbon, as well as organic material such as willow reeds and long leaves, anything flexible, long and not too wide will probably work. Here I’m showing you how to weave with paper/card and how to use it in a greetings card. It’s a great way to have a go at weaving, once you’ve tried it I guarantee you’ll want to weave with other materials. There will be other projects involving weaving with other materials on the things-to-make-and-do website so try them out and have some fun.

Super Simple Paper Flowers Look Great Now!

Paper Flowers Simple Scalloped
Simple paper flowers, made from scalloped circles, in gorgeous pastel brights....a nice touch of color that the world could use just about now. Don't you think? I have already started making some projects with these, which I'll be happy to show you of course, but in the meantime I thought I'd teach you how to make these so you can get started right away! And of course I always give credit where credit is due—I learned how to make these from a Craft Schooling Sunday contributor,
You'll Need:
  • scalloped paper punch, I used both a 3" and a 2", but if you only get one, go for the bigger one (If you don't own a scalloped circle punch and don't want to purchase one, you could try this with circles or cut some loosely scalloped circles by hand.)
  • laser printer paper, pastel shades, sold in a pack
  • metal brads, you know, paper fasteners? or a needle and thread or some thin wire
  • a sponge
  • a thick needle or something sharp to make a hole in the paper

A Handmade Hanukkah Game: Spinning tops From Plastic Bottle Caps!

Hanukkah Spinning Tops from Bottle caps2
Here's a Hanukkah craft that's also a Hanukkah game! Spinning tops are a traditional Hanukkah toy, so what better activity to engage the kids this Hanukkah than with a simple technique for making their own brigade of spinning tops? Honestly, I think this is one of my best ideas ever, because these tops spin so amazingly well, it's almost hard to believe!
Hanukkah Spinning Top from large Bottlecap 4
You'll Need:
  • plastic bottle caps: either from regular soda bottles, wide mouthed juice bottles, or bottles like vinegar bottles
  • toothpicks or wooden skewers
  • a thick needle or sharp item, such as a hat pin or those metal things you use to hold poultry together for roasting (employed by an adult only)
  • colorful electrical tape (optional)
  • quick drying glue (optional

Package Treats In Festive Boxes Made From Recycled Baby Formula Cans!

Purim Materna Boxes 3
When there are babies, there is very often baby formula! Hopefully not in place of nursing, which we all know is the best for any baby, but every mother has to make decisions about how to raise her family that are for the good of everyone! That said, Materna (baby formula) is quite popular here in Israel, and so there are lots of cans floating around begging to be used for craft projects! These metal cans have wonderfully strong lids which make them ideal candidates for recycling as gift containers for any occasion!

Recycled Plastic Plates

Purim purses on fence
Once upon a Purim a few years back I decided to make some designer purses from plastic plates! They're perfect for little girls to give to their friends on Purim, and they'd be great for birthday party favor bags!
Of course you could make the same thing from large plates, and your creations would then be large enough to hold a respectable gift. A miniature bottle of wine or grape juice together with some other packaged foods that are flat (how about a nice sandwich?) would make a nice presentation. And the truth is, with my experience most people would much rather receive something fun like this, than a huge basket!

Recycled Soda Bottles: Are Great For Giving Treats!

Purim Soda in Hand
When I figured out this earth friendly packaging trick a few years ago, I was so excited! The shiny bottle makes the hand printed paper inside look amazing, and as you may already know, I just love projects that involve recycling. I've used this idea several times for giving treats on Purim, but you can certainly pull this one out of your hat any time you need a packaging idea for home baked goods or even a small present!

Purim Soda Bottle Mishloach Manot
I would recommend printing or stamping your own paper for a completely unique presentation, but if you just don't have the time or the inclination, so you could certainly use some gorgeous scrap-booking paper.
You'll Need:
  • Clear soda or other drink bottles
  • Patterned Paper (that you've hopefully printed yourself)
  • Ribbon
  • Cellophane
  • A strong hole punch, my old fashioned metal one works great
